The Tokyo Anime Award Festival (TAAF) will be held March 20-23 at Toho Cinemas Nihonbashi in the capital's Nihonbashi district in Chuo Ward.
The TAA had been held as part of the Tokyo International Anime Fair since 2002. But the anime fair will merge with the Anime Contents Expo (ACE) to offer AnimeJapan from spring.
The new TAAF was set up to recognize excellence in animation. The best commercial work will be given the "Anime of the Year" gong, with other prizes also awarded to titles submitted for the competition. Individuals who have made significant contributions to the industry will be honored with the Achievement Award.
During the festival, screenings of the best anime films from around the world and other events will be offered at the venue.
Currently, the TAAF is accepting entries for the competition. Previously unreleased works of anime that have not been screened in Japan for commercial purposes are eligible.
Yves Nougarede, films and program planning manager of France's Annecy International Animation Film Festival, will serve as a jury member. Koji Yamamura, whose "Mt. Head" was nominated for Best Animated Short at the 75th Academy Awards, will serve as program supervisor.
The competition accepts both feature-length animated films 60 minutes or longer and animated shorts shorter than 60 minutes. The top TAAF2014 International Feature Animation Grand Prix, Best International Feature Animation Film, Best Domestic Feature Animation Film and Best Student Feature Animation Film prizes will be given to works submitted to the feature film division. The short film division will also present equivalent awards.
Entries will be accepted until Jan. 10.
Members of the public can attend the selection process to be held at the multiplex, which will open also on March 20.
The awards-giving ceremony will be held on March 22 at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center in Koto Ward.
