The story of seven girls from the quake-hit city of Sendai who dream of becoming idols will hit big and small screens across Japan in 2014.
“Wake Up, Girls!” is the latest anime project by “Lucky Star” and “Kannagi” director Yutaka Yamamoto.
The announcement of the 2014 release was made during a special event held at the Wonder Festival at the International Exhibition Hall of the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba.
Yamamoto, screenwriter Toko Machida and composer Satoru Kosaki, as well as seven main voice cast members, appeared on stage to unveil the much-anticipated project.
Yamamoto has repeatedly visited Sendai and the Tohoku region to participate in relief efforts for the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. He also produced a short charity anime titled “blossom.”
The director said he then came up with an idea of local girls who want to be idols. The project started moving forward after Machida showed her support and wanted to be a part of the project.
The anime characters were designed by Sunao Chikaoka, who provided original character designs for “Abnormal Physiology Seminar.”
Similar to the girls in the anime, the seven voice actresses were chosen from amateur ranks through an open audition with more than 2,000 applicants. The seven performed anime songs as idol group Wake Up, Girls! at the Chiba event.
“Wake Up, Girls!” is being co-produced by Yamamoto’s anime studio, Ordet Co., and Tatsunoko Production Co.
