Creator Naoko Takeuchi’s “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon” will be waving her magic wand again in a new anime to be simulcast worldwide on video-sharing website Nico Nico Douga this winter.
Fans gathering at the second installment of a special 20th anniversary celebration event for the manga and anime series at the Nicofarre music hall in Tokyo’s Roppongi district on Aug. 4 were the first to hear the news.
At the event’s first installment last summer, fans were told that the new episode would be released in summer 2013. But despite expectations in Japan and abroad, production was delayed.
While a worldwide simulcast of a new anime is not a rare practice, a globally popular title like “Sailor Moon” is certain to generate an enthusiastic response and help raise the profile of Nico Nico Douga outside Japan.
As previously reported, all-girl idol group Momoiro Clover Z will sing the opening and ending theme songs for the new episode.
Other details, however, remain to be revealed, including the names of an anime studio, staff and voice cast members, as well as whether it will have a television run.
The original “Sailor Moon” manga series began in December 1991, and it was adapted into an animated TV series in March 1992. The manga books were translated into 17 languages and sold in more than 50 countries and regions.
For the first time in eight years, a new “Sailor Moon” musical will hit a Tokyo theater in September.
